I am writing to you as an outraged and deeply alarmed constituent and American citizen. In a recent interview with journalist Kristen Welker, President Donald Trump was asked whether due process under the Fifth Amendment applies to everyone, including citizens and noncitizens. His response: “I don’t know. I’m not a lawyer.” This is not a harmless gaffe. This is the President of the United States publicly declaring ignorance (or indifference) toward one of the most basic and essential constitutional protections. This is not a man who merely misunderstands his job. This is a man who has shown, repeatedly, that he holds our laws, our institutions, and our democracy in contempt. We are far past the point of warnings. President Trump and his Republican administration have made it abundantly clear: they will say the quiet part out loud. They will abuse their power, ignore constitutional limits, and openly admit they have no intention of protecting the rights and freedoms of the people they swore to serve. Congress cannot remain silent. The legislative branch was designed to be a check on executive overreach. Every day you fail to act is a day you allow this erosion of democracy to deepen. If this statement, along with the mountain of other evidence showing lawbreaking, abuse of power, and open hostility to the Constitution, does not warrant immediate action, then what does? I am demanding that Congress take swift and decisive action: begin investigations, hold hearings, and file articles of impeachment for every clear and deliberate violation of law. President Trump has proven, time and again, that he is unfit for office. It is your duty to uphold your oath and remove him. The events that you are allowing to continue are disturbing, and your inaction is disgraceful. Step up and do the job you were elected to do, respect the Constitution you swore an oath to uphold, and make the madness stop. Reinstitute the rule of law. The American people are watching. History is watching.
