Urgent: DHS Funding Must Include Limits on ICE and Border Patrol

To: Sen. Hirono, Sen. Schatz

From: A constituent in Kula, HI

January 23

I’m writing because the upcoming DHS appropriations decisions demand immediate and decisive action. Any Please pleasels to impose real limits on ICE and Border Patrol should not receive your vote. The killing of Renee Good on January 7 is a warning about what happens when federal immigration enforcement operates without meaningful oversight. Congress cannot allow this pattern of violence and impunity to continue. You have the power—and the responsibility—to stop further harm. I’m urging you to use your authority by: •Rejecting any FY2026 appropriations bill that increases funding for ICE or Border Patrol, including detention. Refusing to support any DHS appropriations bill unless it: • Enforces strict limits on dragnet arrest operations and prevents targeting based on race, language, workplace, or location; and “allowing” ice to break into peoples private homes. • Ends Border Patrol deployments into cities and pushes back against its expanding enforcement mandate; • Restricts DHS’s ability to reprogram or transfer funds, especially for detention. No additional funding should move forward until there are enforceable limits and real accountability. Lives are at stake. I’m very concerned. I’m asking you to stand firmly for the safety, dignity, and rights of the people you represent and ensure that these agencies cannot continue operating without restraint. Please - please continue your hard work and do your best to urge all senate you come across to do the same.
