Oppose Military Action in Iran and Support Congressional War Powers Resolution
To: Sen. Cornyn, Rep. Casar, Sen. Cruz
From: A constituent in Manor, TX
February 28
I am writing to urge you to oppose the unauthorized military strikes against Iran that occurred on February 28, 2026, and to support the war powers resolution being introduced by Rep. Thomas Massie and Rep. Ro Khanna when Congress reconvenes.
The Constitution is clear. Article 1 grants Congress, not the executive branch, the power to declare war. President Trump ordered these strikes without seeking congressional approval, bypassing the constitutional requirement for a vote. While the Gang of Eight received a briefing earlier in the week about potential military action, a briefing is not authorization. The American people deserve to have their elected representatives on record regarding whether we should be at war with Iran.
Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer correctly noted that the administration has not provided critical details about the scope and immediacy of the threat that supposedly justified these strikes. He characterized Trump's approach as "fitful cycles of lashing out and risking wider conflict" that are "not a viable strategy." I agree completely. Confronting Iran's nuclear ambitions requires American strength and strategic clarity, not unilateral military action that risks dragging us into another Middle Eastern war.
This is not the first time this administration has overstepped constitutional boundaries on military action. Lawmakers have already been working to limit Trump's ability to carry out lethal strikes on suspected drug-smuggling boats in the Caribbean. The pattern is troubling and demands congressional action.
I urge you to cosponsor the Massie-Khanna war powers resolution and vote to reassert congressional authority over decisions to engage in military conflicts. The Constitution requires it, and the American people deserve a say through their representatives before we commit to another war. Please inform me of your position on this resolution and whether you will support efforts to prevent further unauthorized military action against Iran.
