Help your voters, not your donors.

I've donated a lot of money over the years to candidates I support. But it's been increasingly common to receive 2 to 3 texts and emails daily asking for money for candidates that are running in different states, states in which I have no vote. In addition, since the Supreme Court decided that Citizen's United was constitutional, corporations have been allowed to donate money freely. I honestly believe that this particular ruling was not in the best interests of American citizens. This allows wealthy donors to donate so much more than probably 95% of the average American. This gives wealthy donors and business owners incredible leverage over all elected officials. Add to that, the money that wealthy business owners give to elected officials through lobbyists, gives an edge to those entities that can afford to pay. Again, the top 1% have the ability to call the President, Congress, the Supreme Court, and all state officials for favors. "We got you elected, now do this for us" mentality. Please consider setting a maximum that each candidate is allowed to spend on a campaign. The higher the office the higher the limit. I'd love for ads to be consistent: this is what I will fight for, this is what I'll fight against. This could actually just be a mailer, email or flyer. Rather than focus on the political party, focus on what the candidate actually believes in and will fight for. Why should candidates be allowed to accept millions of dollars in donations for a job that pays a couple hundred thousand a year? It just leaves the elected officials indebted to those who donated more. The amount of money that a candidate can raise doesn't guarantee that he/she is the best person for the job. Give 95% of Americans equal footing in elections and the fidelity that government officials need to have. Set limits on the money each candidate can raise.
