Close Alligator Alcatraz and Investigate DHS for Human Rights Abuses

To: Sen. Cornyn, Rep. Casar, Sen. Cruz

From: A constituent in Manor, TX

May 23

Alligator Alcatraz needs to be shut down immediately, every detainee released, and DHS investigated for human rights abuses. This facility has operated with zero transparency since opening in July, racking up documented complaints about human rights violations and environmental destruction — all while costing Florida taxpayers roughly $600 million. Reports this week show detainees being transferred at a frantic pace, with eight flights moving people to Alexandria, Louisiana in under a week and no official explanation given. Families are describing sections of the facility being physically dismantled. If DHS Secretary Mullin claimed last week there were no plans to close it, someone is lying — and the people paying the price are human beings held in a remote Everglades detention site with no accountability. Rep. Maxwell Frost is already investigating these rushed transfers. That investigation needs to go further and treat this for what it is: a pattern of conduct that rises to crimes against humanity. I expect you to demand a full federal investigation into DHS's treatment of detainees at this facility and push for their immediate release.
