This War Is a Global Catastrophe—Democrats Must Act Now
To: Rep. Jeffries, Sen. Schumer, Sen. Gillibrand
From: A constituent in Brooklyn, NY
April 14
I am writing to demand immediate action to end U.S. involvement in the war in Iran—and to urge Democratic leadership to meet this moment with far greater urgency, clarity, and resolve. The so-called ceasefire is not holding. It is poorly defined, inconsistently communicated, and actively undermined. Military operations continue across the region, including ongoing Israeli strikes in Lebanon that are driving mass displacement and civilian harm, while tensions in the Strait of Hormuz remain dangerously high as Iran restricts passage. This is not de-escalation. It is a fragile pause masking a conflict that is still very much alive. The consequences are no longer regional—they are global. The United Nations Development Programme now warns that more than 32 million people could be pushed into poverty as a result of the economic fallout from this war, driven by a cascading “triple shock” of energy disruption, food insecurity, and weakened global growth. Those most affected will be the most vulnerable—people who had only just escaped poverty, now being forced back into it. This is the true cost of this war. It is not just a military conflict—it is a systemic unraveling. It erodes the fragile architecture that sustains human life at scale: access to food, energy, stability, and peace. It accelerates inequality, deepens suffering, and destabilizes entire regions. It degrades the environment, undermines international law, weakens alliances, and corrodes the moral standing of the United States. This war is not just a failure of policy. It is a failure of responsibility. And yet, it continues—without clear authorization, without a coherent strategy, and without the support of the American people. That must change. Democratic leadership must also reckon with its own role in this moment. Voters are watching a party that should be the clear opposition to this chaos struggle to respond with the force and clarity the situation demands. At a time when the stakes could not be higher, hesitation, half-measures, and political caution are not just ineffective—they are dangerous. If Democrats want to earn public trust, win upcoming elections, and create the conditions necessary to investigate, hold accountable, and ultimately remove a reckless executive, they must demonstrate real leadership now. That means drawing clear lines. Taking risks. Acting with urgency. I urge you to: • Publicly and unequivocally oppose continued U.S. involvement in this war. • Oppose any funding that would prolong or expand the conflict. • Demand immediate enforcement of de-escalation and an end to ongoing military actions, including those driving displacement in Lebanon. • Reassert Congress’s constitutional authority and act to end unauthorized military engagement. • Push for a credible diplomatic resolution. • Pursue all available constitutional mechanisms to remove the President from office, as his actions demonstrate that he is unfit to serve and pose a clear danger. This is a defining moment. The world is absorbing the consequences of this war. Millions are being pushed into poverty. Stability is eroding. And the United States is complicit in prolonging it. Why are we allowing this to continue? Congress must act. Democrats must lead. The time for caution has passed. End this war!
