Condemn the shameful treatment of Sen. Padilla

To: Sen. Hagerty, Sen. Blackburn, Rep. Cohen

From: A verified voter in Memphis, TN

June 14

The forcible removal and arrest of Senator Alex Padilla from Secretary Kristi Noem's press conference is a deeply concerning violation of democratic principles and congressional oversight authority. As a sitting U.S. Senator and ranking member of the Border Security and Immigration subcommittee, Padilla had every right to ask questions and seek information related to immigration enforcement actions occurring in his state. The Trump administration's justification that Padilla was being disruptive rings hollow - he clearly identified himself and his intent was to understand policies impacting his constituents. To physically drag an elected representative from the room and place him in handcuffs for attempting to carry out his constitutional duties is an egregious overreach of executive power. This incident sends a chilling message about the administration's hostility towards checks and balances. If a Senator cannot safely attend a publicity event and ask questions, how can proper oversight occur? I urge you to condemn this authoritarian behavior in the strongest terms and take action to reassert Congress' critical role in government accountability and transparency. Allowing this alarming precedent to stand unchallenged would further erode our democratic institutions.
