Vote Against FISA Section 702 Reauthorization

To: Rep. Mannion, Sen. Gillibrand, Sen. Schumer

From: A verified voter in Syracuse, NY

April 30

Vote against the FISA Title VII reauthorization that just passed the House 235-191. This bill extends the Section 702 mass surveillance program for three years without any meaningful reforms. The bill contains no warrant requirement for searching Americans' communications in the Section 702 database. It also lacks any outside oversight beyond letting the FBI, CIA, and NSA police themselves. After 18 years of documented violations, self-reporting has failed. A recent federal district court in New York already ruled that a warrant is required to search the Section 702 database, yet the Justice Department is fighting that decision in the Second Circuit while pushing this reauthorization through. The Fourth Amendment contains no national security exception. The Founders who wrote it used encryption themselves and understood the need to protect private communications from government overreach. Section 702 in its current form is a direct violation of that constitutional protection. This program needs to be abolished, not rubber-stamped for another three years without reform.
