Support Freedom to Use Bathrooms That Match Gender Identity

To: Sen. Slotkin, Sen. Peters, Rep. Walberg

From: A verified voter in Stevensville, MI

April 3

I'm asking you to publicly oppose bathroom bans and support the freedom of transgender people to use facilities that match their gender identity. These laws criminalize people for simply existing in public spaces and force families to choose between their safety and their home. Bathroom bans are spreading across states with increasingly severe penalties. Some laws threaten transgender people with jail time for using the correct restroom, with penalties harsher than those for indecent exposure or DUI. Laws that apply to private businesses, not just government buildings, make it nearly impossible for transgender people to participate in daily life. Families are already considering leaving states where their children face the threat of incarceration. The real-world impact is clear. Transgender people and their allies are willing to face arrest to protest these dangerous laws because they understand what's at stake. Ministers, parents, and activists ranging in age from 34 to 84 have put themselves on the line. Our state should not be in the business of policing who uses which bathroom or forcing people to flee their communities. Protect the dignity and safety of all your constituents by standing against these bans.
