Protect Young Gays, Support Diversity

To: Sen. Merkley, Rep. Bonamici, Sen. Wyden

From: A verified voter in Hillsboro, OR

April 23

A diverse and inclusive society allows all individuals to feel accepted and thrive. Suppressing representations of the LGBTQ community in educational materials sends a harmful message that these identities are unacceptable or shameful. This can contribute to mental health challenges, low self-esteem, and a lack of belonging for LGBTQ youth. We should embrace diversity by exposing children to a range of cultures, identities, and family structures through age-appropriate materials. This promotes understanding, empathy, and acceptance from an early age. As a society, we have a responsibility to create an environment where all individuals feel safe, valued, and able to be their authentic selves.
