I am writing to express my deep concern over the recent probationary terminations across the federal government, particularly at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), as well as the looming threat of reductions in force (RIFs) at federal agencies, including NOAA. These actions have significant implications not only for the dedicated professionals who serve in these roles but also for the critical work our agency performs in service to the American people.
NOAA plays an essential role in protecting life, property, and our nation’s economy. Our work provides accurate weather forecasting, supports coastal resilience, manages fisheries, advances climate science, and monitors environmental changes that impact public health and safety. The termination of skilled employees—many of whom have already demonstrated their commitment and expertise—undermines our agency’s ability to fulfill its mission effectively. The prospect of RIFs further exacerbates this concern, as they threaten to hollow out NOAA’s workforce at a time when our services are needed more than ever.
With increasingly severe weather events, rising sea levels, and growing economic reliance on marine industries, NOAA’s work is not just valuable—it is indispensable. Gutting our workforce would have far-reaching consequences, diminishing our ability to provide timely, science-based information to policymakers, businesses, and communities nationwide.
I urge you to take immediate action to halt these terminations and oppose any proposed RIFs that would weaken NOAA and other federal agencies performing vital public services. I hope you will advocate for the preservation of our workforce and ensure that NOAA can continue to meet its mission for the benefit of all Americans.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to your response.
