In my email this morning was "The Brief" from John Light, the lead article was headlined: "Washington State Finds Citizens on DOJ’s Purported List of Noncitizen Voters" (https://talkingpointsmemo.com/?p=1561865).
The article details a series of almost comically incompetent attempts by the DOJ to cast doubt on our elections by providing Secretaries of State and election officials with lists of supposedly ineligible voters and demands to stop those people from voting.
It made me proud that our Washington Secretary of State, Steve Hobbs, recognized this for what it was and responded with a firm rejection of the DOJ's demands, but more action is needed.
The DOJ was not acting with competent integrity to ensure that our elections are free and fair. The actions reported by Mr. Light seem, at best, a display of incredible sloppiness and a callous disregard for the impact of the accusations the DOJ was making on both the individuals named and on our electoral process. At worst they are an overt attack on public confidence in our elections and the legitimacy of their outcomes. Given the constant drumbeat of election denial that comes from President Trump and others in the Republican Party the worst case concern seems all too credible.
These attacks on our elections must be investigated. We need to know how this happened and who is responsible. If it was sloppy, incompetent work that needs to be addressed corrected. If it was part of an effort to undermine confidence in our elections the people responsible at every level need to be held accountable.
Your job is to get to the bottom of this. We need to know what happened and we need to know that the problem has been corrected. Please act promptly and decisively. These threats to our democracy can not be ignored.
