My Dear Senators, I’m writing to express my deep conviction that the Democratic Party is in need to some major re-calibration. We should not have lost the election by any amount, let alone this much. And I feel the reason is that the Party’s approach to messaging has been focused on the faithful, and not the folks who voted for Trump. Most of my Democratic friends and family spent the last few months before the election wondering why the race was so close. We never got answers. I couldn’t believe the polls, either, but they turned out to be mostly correct. Social media is sadly a waste of energy and time, as again it’s an echo chamber for people with similar views, when it’s not an open door for abuse. All this is to say that Democrats do not understand yet what happened, but they SHOULD realize the brand may be irreparably toxic for the many millions of voters who chose to ignore who Trump is, who the organizations are who are propping him up, and that the government can and should be made to work for them, rather than being torn down. Can Democrats get those voters, or does a new party have to form? Not some ‘independent’ party that sits on the midpoint between the hard right GOP and the hard Left, but one that’s built on reaching for prosperity and equality for every American. We cannot sit around wringing our hands and lamenting Trumps actions, either now or in the coming years. We must take action on the ground that teaches us what we missed so badly this Nov 5th, and fold that into a new approach, either for the Democratic Party or for some new party.
