Oppose the TRANS MICE Act: Bad Science, Worse Legislation

To: Sen. Slotkin, Rep. Walberg, Sen. Peters

From: A verified voter in Stevensville, MI

June 22

The TRANS MICE Act is an embarrassment that should never reach a vote. Rep. Mace introduced legislation targeting "transgender animal experiments" while apparently not knowing — or not caring — that "trans mice" in scientific literature refers to transgenic mice, a cornerstone of cancer and disease research. A Community Note on X corrected this publicly. She doubled down anyway. This matters beyond the mockery. The bill claims $241 million in federal funds went to "gender-transition experiments on animals" without citing a single specific example, because the research it's describing doesn't exist the way she's framing it. Hormone studies in animals are how we understand cancer treatment, recovery, and human health. Defunding that research doesn't protect taxpayers — it sets back medicine. As one critic put it plainly: Mace would rather scientists experiment on humans when studying the effects of hormone therapy. Elected officials have a basic obligation to understand what they're legislating. This bill fails that standard completely. Vote against it.
