I urge you to publicly and forcefully condemn a deeply inappropriate and inflammatory post by President Donald Trump on his Truth Social account following the tragic murder of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Reiner.
Rather than offering condolences or respecting the grieving family, the President posted the following message:
“A very sad thing happened last night in Hollywood. Rob Reiner, a tortured and struggling, but once very talented movie director and comedy star, has passed away, together with his wife, Michele, reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS.
He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J. Trump, with his obvious paranoia reaching new heights as the Trump Administration surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness, and with the Golden Age of America upon us, perhaps like never before. May Rob and Michele rest in peace!”
This childish rhetoric is inflammatory and inappropriate, especially at a time when violence in this country is already out of control and families are mourning unspeakable loss. Framing a brutal double homicide as though it were caused by political disagreement — and invoking terms like “Trump Derangement Syndrome” in reference to a grieving family — undermines the dignity of the presidency and contributes to a toxic political environment, rather than calming tensions or uniting the nation.
If you care about decency, civility and respect, you will join in the widespread condemnation of this statement, reaffirming that:
• our leaders should prioritize empathy and compassion in the face of tragedy,
• political disagreements should never be turned into justification or commentary on acts of violence,
• and inflammatory rhetoric from public officials has real consequences for national discourse and public safety.
Thank you.
