Opposing Online Age Verification or Mandatory ID laws

To: Sen. Schiff, Rep. Whitesides, Sen. Padilla

From: A constituent in Canyon Country, CA

March 5

I am writing to oppose any legislation requiring online age verification or mandatory ID collection for internet access or specific services. While protecting minors is important, age verification and ID laws create serious problems: - Privacy risks: Centralizing personal identification data online increases vulnerability to breaches and misuse - Surveillance concerns: These systems enable tracking and profiling of all users, not just minors - Barriers to access: Vulnerable populationshomeless individuals, undocumented immigrants, abuse survivors lose internet access - Ineffectiveness: Age verification is easily circumvented and doesn't reliably protect minors - Free speech impact: Verification requirements discourage people from accessing lawful content Better alternatives exist: parental controls, platform-level protections, and digital literacy education can protect minors without mass surveillance infrastructure. I urge you to reject age verification and ID mandate legislation.
