Do not support government censorship through age verification requirements

To: Sen. Ashby, Assembly Member Bendett

I’m EXTREMELY disappointed to see that you are sponsoring legislation that will curtail free speech. Numerous historical attempts to force age verification for protected speech among consenting adults has demonstrated little to no effect in preventing minors from accessing sexual content and an extreme chilling affect on First Amendment protected speech. Age verification requirements are nothing but a back door effort to censor sexual content that conservatives find objectionable. No matter what law you put in place to try to require age verification, teens who want to access that content will lie and gain access. This isn’t a place for government meddling. Let parents who want to limit their children’s access to certain materials step up and be parents for once. Please reconsider your support of this government censorship of protected speech. The legislation you’re sponsoring will NOT accomplish its stated goal of protecting children. Frankly, I’m sick and tired of “think of the children” being used as a justification for treating adults as if they were children. For once, think of the adults and allow us to exercise our constitutionally protected rights without government interference or mandated invasion of our privacy.
