Even when I think I'm inured to the lawlessness the Trump administration, I find that they are still capable of shocking me. Today I learned from the New York Times, in an article entitled "U.S. Deports Nine Migrants in Secret, Ignoring Legal Protections" by Pranav Baskar and Hamed Aleaziz that the Trump administration thinks they have found a clever way to skirt court orders against deporting people to their home countries where they would be in danger by deporting them to a "third-party" country, in this case Cameroon, that has not agreed to accept them as immigrants. As a result they are confined – presumably for life – unless they agree to be returned to their home countries. According to lawyers representing the deportees none of them had any record of violent crime. I find it hard to believe that these cases are the only time this has occurred.
It is imperative that Congress find some way to hold the people responsible for these abuses accountable. At an absolute minimum hold up all funding for the Department of Homeland Security until these abuses are rectified and the perpetuators are held accountable. If Congress fails to find a way to reassert itself and to do its job Congress is contributing to the collapse of our country.
