As a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, I am deeply concerned about the dissolution of the Administration for Community Living (ACL) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) under Executive Order 14222. These agencies provide essential supports that help older adults, people with disabilities, and individuals with mental health and substance use challenges remain active, independent, and engaged—services that recreational therapists like myself rely on to improve quality of life and reduce long-term healthcare costs. Eliminating these agencies not only harms the people we serve but will ultimately strain our communities and economy by increasing institutionalization, caregiver burden, and preventable health crises.
