I am writing to demand that you immediately initiate impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump and vote to remove him from office for his flagrant violation of the Constitution in ordering unauthorized military strikes against Nigeria on December 25, 2024. This is not a matter for debate or further study. Trump has committed an impeachable offense that strikes at the heart of our constitutional system, and Congress must act now.
Trump ordered military strikes in northwest Nigeria without any congressional authorization whatsoever. There was no declaration of war. There was no authorization for the use of military force. There was no imminent threat to American lives that would justify emergency action. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed the strikes targeted multiple militants at alleged ISIS camps, but confirmation of the action does not make it legal. The Constitution explicitly grants Congress alone the power to declare war, and Trump has trampled on that authority.
This is not an isolated incident. Trump ordered large-scale strikes against Islamic State targets in Syria just days earlier, also without congressional authorization. He is systematically dismantling the constitutional separation of powers and daring Congress to stop him. Every day that passes without accountability emboldens him to commit further violations.
Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has publicly contradicted Trump's justification for the strikes, stating that Trump's characterization of Nigeria as religiously intolerant does not reflect reality. Trump launched military action based on a false narrative, compounding his constitutional violation with reckless disregard for facts on the ground.
Your oath of office requires you to defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. A president who unilaterally wages war without congressional authorization is a domestic threat to constitutional government. I expect you to introduce or cosponsor articles of impeachment immediately and to vote for Trump's removal from office. Anything less is a dereliction of your constitutional duty.
