I am your constituent, and I am writing you today with serious concerns regarding H.R. 4795, the misleadingly named “Protect Economic and Academic Freedom Act of 2026.” The purpose of this bill is to make “commercial” boycott unlawful. Specifically, this bill seeks to prohibit the ability to boycott Israel, and academic programs in Israel. To begin with, prohibiting boycott is a sort of negative-negative — which makes verifying, validating, and enforcing such a law nearly impossible. If I am not allowed to withdraw my support for Israel, and/or academic programs in Israel… how is such withdrawal of funding, support, and patronage measured and governed? The real issue here is that this bill sets an alarmingly dangerous precedent that prohibits an individual or an organization from choosing a good, service, product, or cause that IS NOT Israel. H.R. 4795 undermines individual choice, and is blatantly anti-democratic. As I mentioned at the beginning — this bill is egregiously misnamed and has nothing to do with “freedom.” Removing the ability to boycott a thing is decidedly FASCIST. And also, arguably, akin to slavery. Beyond that — passing or even giving consideration to such a bill while Israel is ACTIVELY participating in a genocide against the Palestinian people is abhorrent; absolutely beyond the pale. H.R. 4795 should be an obvious non-starter. But I write to you today because I worry that Congress is putting Israel’s interests ahead of America’s interests. So I make my call to you… my elected representatives: I urge you to oppose H.R. 4795. Further, I urge you to DENOUNCE H.R. 4795 publicly. It would be in America’s best interests for your office to release a statement of exactly how anti-democratic this proposed legislation is. And in the best interest of your political career.
