I am writing to express serious concern about the lack of public transparency surrounding Senator Mitch McConnell’s current health status and ability to carry out the duties of his office. Recent reporting indicates that Senator McConnell was hospitalized after an emergency response at his Washington, D.C. residence, with dispatch audio reportedly referencing an unconscious person, cardiac arrest, and CPR in progress. While I respect Senator McConnell’s personal medical privacy, the public has a legitimate interest in knowing whether a sitting U.S. Senator is alive, conscious, able to communicate independently, and able to perform the essential duties of office. This is not a partisan issue. It is a matter of representation, public trust, and national security. Sitting senators have access to classified briefings, sensitive legislative work, committee responsibilities, and votes that affect the entire country. If a senator is hospitalized for an extended period with limited official explanation, Congress should have a clear and verifiable process for confirming whether that member remains capable of serving, safeguarding classified information, and making independent decisions. These concerns should be taken seriously and addressed directly. Congress should publicly seek transparency regarding Senator McConnell’s ability to serve, confirm whether he is able to communicate and make decisions independently, and establish a formal, nonpartisan process for prolonged congressional incapacity. If a sitting senator is unable to perform the duties of office, voters deserve timely disclosure, and Congress has a responsibility to protect representation, national security, and public trust.
