I am writing to urge you to speak out and act against the reported settlement of President Trump's $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS.
This situation is deeply alarming. The Justice Department — which answers to President Trump — is now discussing whether to settle a lawsuit filed by President Trump, potentially paying him billions of taxpayer dollars. One option on the table would have the IRS drop audits of Trump, his family, and his businesses. Legal experts across party lines have called this collusive and potentially unlawful. Federal law under Section 7217 of the tax code explicitly prohibits the President and White House officials from interfering with IRS audits. Violating this law carries criminal penalties.
No president should be able to sue the government he controls, have his own Justice Department settle that suit, and pocket taxpayer money — or get his tax audits wiped away. A former IRS contractor committed a crime by leaking those returns, and he was punished for it. But that does not entitle the President to a $10 billion windfall from American taxpayers.
Missourians are struggling with the cost of groceries, utilities, and healthcare. The idea that federal dollars could go directly into the President's personal pocket is indefensible.
I urge you to:
- Call for a halt to any settlement discussions until independent legal review is completed.
- Support congressional oversight of DOJ settlement authority when the President is a party.
- Make clear publicly that no sitting president should profit from a lawsuit against his own government.
This is not a partisan issue. It is a question of basic accountability and the rule of law. I expect you to stand up for your constituents.
