Impeach President Trump for Unlawful Military Action in Venezuela

To: Sen. Slotkin, Sen. Peters, Rep. Dingell

From: A constituent in Ann Arbor, MI

January 21

I am writing to urge you to initiate impeachment proceedings against President Trump for his unlawful military operations in Venezuela, including the capture of President Nicolás Maduro. These actions violate international law and appear designed to enable the seizure of Venezuelan oil resources for personal enrichment. The U.S. military operation that resulted in Maduro's capture raises serious legal questions about the use of American armed forces without congressional authorization. Legal analysts are already questioning whether the Caribbean boat strikes and Venezuelan intervention comply with domestic and international law. The last comparable action occurred 35 years ago with Manuel Noriega's arrest in Panama, an operation that itself faced significant legal scrutiny and criticism. Beyond the legal violations, evidence suggests these military actions serve Trump's financial interests rather than legitimate national security objectives. Venezuela possesses the world's largest proven oil reserves, and this intervention positions Trump and his associates to profit from access to these resources. Using the U.S. military as a tool for personal financial gain constitutes a clear abuse of presidential power and betrays the public trust. The Constitution grants Congress the power to impeach a president for high crimes and misdemeanors. Launching unauthorized military operations against a sovereign nation to facilitate personal business interests meets this threshold. Communities across the country, including in Chicago where anti-war protests are being organized, recognize the illegitimacy of these actions. I urge you to exercise your constitutional duty and support articles of impeachment against President Trump. This military adventurism sets a dangerous precedent for future presidents to use American armed forces for private gain. Congress must act swiftly to hold the president accountable, reassert its war powers authority, and prevent further illegal military operations. The integrity of our constitutional system depends on your willingness to check this abuse of executive power.
