Protect Disabled Adults and Their Families From Trump's Cruelty

To: Sen. Slotkin, Sen. Peters, Rep. Huizenga

From: A verified voter in Kalamazoo, MI

April 28

I need you to block the proposed rule change that would slash SSI benefits for disabled adults living with low-income family members who receive SNAP. This rule could cut benefits by up to $330 per month or eliminate support entirely for 400,000 people with disabilities. The proposed change would deduct the value of a bedroom from SSI payments even when families are poor enough to qualify for food stamps. A family in Philadelphia with a total income of $17,000 annually would face this penalty. The typical SSI recipient affected by this rule lives in a household earning just $17,000 per year. These families have already proven their poverty to qualify for SNAP. Making them file extensive monthly reports documenting property details, income changes, and expenses is cruel bureaucratic red tape that will overwhelm an already strained system. This policy is also fiscally reckless. Cutting one disabled adult's benefit saves taxpayers about $11 per day, but forcing that person into a residential facility because their family can no longer afford to care for them costs hundreds of dollars daily. Forty Down syndrome organizations and the National Association of Evangelicals oppose this change. Disability advocates and budget experts agree it's more humane and less expensive for disabled adults to live at home. Stop this rule before it devastates vulnerable families.
