The turbulent AI era is here, and the choices we make now are critical. We need a federal plan to ensure the good outweighs the bad — and that starts with protecting workers. AI is already replacing entry-level white-collar workers at scale, and robotics are on track to displace close to 30% of the job market. We have no safety net built for that reality.
Bill Gates recently told MIT Technology Review that we've already passed the danger threshold for AI's job market disruption, and that almost nothing has been done about it. A token or robot tax that funds expanded unemployment support and retraining programs is the obvious starting point. The revenue exists. The political will doesn't — yet.
Please push for bipartisan hearings that bring real AI expertise into government, and champion legislation that funds a serious worker safety net for the displacement wave already underway. The window to get ahead of this is closing fast.
