An Open Letter

To: Sen. Husted, Sen. Moreno, Rep. Latta

From: A constituent in Lorain, OH

March 13

The proposal to end birthright citizenship in the United States would represent a drastic and unconstitutional departure from long-standing American principles and values. The 14th Amendment clearly guarantees citizenship to all persons born in the United States, anchoring this as a fundamental right that has strengthened our nation's diversity and promise of equal opportunity for generations. Such a policy change would undermine core constitutional protections, tear families apart, and inflict irreparable harm on millions of vulnerable children who had no choice in their circumstances of birth. We must uphold the Constitution and reject any efforts to deprive birthright citizenship, which is a cornerstone of who we are as a nation of immigrants bound by ideals greater than exclusion and discrimination. I urge you to stand firm against this unacceptable proposal that strikes at the heart of American democracy.
