National forests are places of immense natural beauty, and they provide countless benefits to humans, wildlife and the planet. The trees on land managed by the U.S. Forest Service provide shelter to more than 450 endangered species of wildlife, from delicate monarch butterflies to mighty grizzly bears. Their roots help filter drinking water for 66 million Americans. And their leaves absorb carbon, filtering the air and helping to trap climate-warming pollution. Trees take decades to mature, and they can live for centuries. If we allow the oldest trees in our national forests to be logged today, they won't return within our lifetimes. Please protect our national forests by rejecting the proposed increase in timber harvest in the reconciliation bill.
