Oppose National Guard deployment in DC

To: Sen. Murray, Rep. Jayapal, Sen. Cantwell

From: A constituent in Seattle, WA

August 11

I am writing to demand that you take an unequivocal stand against the proposed use of the National Guard to “take over” Washington, D.C. This is not law enforcement — it is a dangerous, authoritarian abuse of power. Donald Trump has already floated using this tactic against other American cities, weaponizing the military to intimidate communities and silence opposition. This is the language and behavior of autocrats, not leaders in a free democracy. His justification rests on blatant lies. Crime in D.C. has dropped sharply in recent years, according to verifiable public data. Disliking the facts does not entitle anyone to ignore them — and certainly not to fire officials for reporting accurate information. That is an assault on truth itself. This is not about safety; it is about dismantling local governance and normalizing military control over U.S. citizens. If this precedent is allowed, no city will be safe from political retaliation. I urge you to speak out immediately, use every legislative tool available, and stand with the people of D.C. — and with the Constitution you swore to uphold — to stop this authoritarian overreach before it spreads.
