Urgent Action Needed to Protect Transgender Rights and Lives

To: Sen. Peters, Sen. Slotkin, Rep. Walberg

From: A constituent in Stevensville, MI

October 29

I am writing to you with grave concern about the devastating impact of anti-transgender policies on our community. The recent tragic loss of Lia Smith, a 21-year-old transgender student and former athlete at Middlebury College in Vermont, serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the deadly consequences these discriminatory laws and attitudes can have. Lia was a passionate advocate for transgender rights and a devoted student who felt compelled to leave athletics due to the overwhelming pressure and isolation she faced. Her story is not unique. Across the country, we are witnessing an alarming increase in anti-trans policies, particularly in sports and education, that are eroding the rights and well-being of transgender individuals. The current legislative landscape is hostile to transgender people, with numerous bills being introduced and passed that restrict their rights and freedoms. These policies don't just limit opportunities; they actively endanger lives. The persistent harassment, discrimination, and marginalization faced by the transgender community have real and often fatal consequences. I urge you to take immediate action to protect transgender rights and lives. This includes opposing any legislation that discriminates against transgender individuals, supporting inclusive policies in sports and education, and advocating for comprehensive protections for the LGBTQ+ community. We must recognize that these are not abstract policy debates, but decisions that directly impact the safety and survival of our constituents. The loss of Lia Smith and others like her should serve as a wake-up call. We need leaders who will stand up for the rights and dignity of all individuals, regardless of their gender identity. Time is of the essence. Every day that passes without action puts more lives at risk. I implore you to use your position to speak out against anti-trans rhetoric, support transgender-inclusive legislation, and work towards creating a society where everyone can live authentically without fear. The lives of our transgender neighbors, friends, and family members depend on your courage and commitment to equality.
