Oppose KOSA and the bills at the Senate Judiciary.
To: Sen. Warnock, Sen. Ossoff
From: A constituent in Hinesville, GA
November 12
I'm writing in regards to the proposed vote by the Senate Committee on the Judiciary regarding KOSA, the App store Accountability Act, COPPA 2.0, the Sammy Act, SCREEN Act, IODA, BlockBEARD, APCA, and STOP CSAM.
I know that more likely than not you will vote in favor and rush this through because you want to give the impression that all of these will protect kids. They will not. Instead, these laws will endanger citizens by increasing the nonconsensual surveillance of families and minors, violating children's rights and opening up backdoors for hackers and leakers to steal and sell data on the dark web. The reason so many people oppose these bills isn't to endanger kids or victims of crime. It's because bills and laws like these make institutions and families more vulnerable to it. Cybersecurity would be a national problem if AV and surveillance programs are exploited due to an enforced duty of care provision and insecure AV apps and programs. Imagine the neuclear codes being stolen and accessed because an FBI or NCMEC member had their identification stolen after using ID to verify. A congresswoman in a state that passed AV laws became the victim of data theft and nonconsensual photo sharing. Covenant Eyes, a well known antiporn program, was at the center of controversy for being used by Josh Duggar and Ron DeHaas's stepson to exploit minors. We all want to protect kids, but the proponents of these bills went on record saying they weren't meant to protect them. Please oppose these ineffective bills.
