Oppose Federal Election Monitors in California for Proposition 50

To: Rep. Quigley, Sen. Durbin, Sen. Duckworth

From: A constituent in Chicago, IL

October 27, 2025

I am writing to express my deep concern about the Trump administration's Department of Justice deploying federal election monitors to five California counties for the upcoming vote on Proposition 50. Although I am a resident of Illinois, I believe this action sets a dangerous precedent that could affect elections nationwide, including in our state. The deployment of federal monitors to Fresno, Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, and Riverside counties is an unusual and potentially disruptive move, especially given that early voting is already underway. While election observers are common, the use of federal monitors in this situation is atypical and raises serious questions about federal overreach in state election processes. This action was requested by the California Republican Party, ostensibly to ensure transparency, ballot security, and compliance with federal law. However, it's crucial to note that California already has robust election integrity measures in place. The introduction of federal monitors at this stage could be seen as an attempt to intimidate voters or cast doubt on the legitimacy of the election process. California Democrats have rightly criticized this move as interference. The timing and nature of this deployment suggest it could be politically motivated rather than a genuine effort to protect election integrity. This sets a troubling precedent that could be used to interfere in elections across the country, including here in Illinois. Proposition 50, which proposes redrawing California's congressional districts, is a state matter that should be decided by California voters without federal intervention. The integrity of our electoral system depends on maintaining clear boundaries between state and federal responsibilities in election administration. I urge you to speak out against this federal intervention in California's election and to take proactive steps to prevent similar actions in Illinois or other states. We must protect the independence of state election processes and resist any attempts to undermine voter confidence or interfere with the democratic process. Please consider issuing a public statement condemning this action and work with your colleagues to introduce or support legislation that would limit federal intervention in state elections absent clear evidence of violations of federal law. Our democracy depends on free and fair elections, and we must act now to protect this fundamental right for all Americans, regardless of which state they call home.
