Codifying abortion as murder under HB 518 poses a grave threat to the human rights and health of all birthing people in Alabama. This unconstitutional measure would not only criminalize abortion at any stage, including cases of non-viable pregnancies, but also jeopardize critical reproductive healthcare services that are essential for preserving lives. With Alabama already facing alarming maternal and infant mortality rates, especially among Black women, implementing such severe restrictions will undoubtedly exacerbate this crisis. Furthermore, the overbroad language of this bill could have unintended consequences for common practices in fertility treatments like IVF, putting individuals and medical professionals at risk of prosecution. By stripping away autonomy over one's body and reproductive choices, HB 518 undermines equal opportunities and perpetuates systemic discrimination against marginalized communities. To uphold fundamental human rights and ensure access to essential healthcare services, voting against HB 518 is imperative. This regressive legislation disregards scientific evidence, tramples on constitutional protections, and gravely endangers the well-being of Alabamians. A vote against HB 518 is a vote to safeguard lives, dignity, and equal rights for all.
