The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) plays a crucial role in providing humanitarian aid and development assistance worldwide. Shutting down or significantly reducing its operations would have devastating consequences for millions of people around the globe who rely on USAID's programs for essential services such as food aid, healthcare, education, and disaster relief. USAID's annual budget of around $40 billion represents a small fraction of the overall federal budget, yet it allows the agency to undertake vital work in over 60 countries. From providing polio vaccinations and preventing the spread of pandemics to operating famine detection systems and responding to natural disasters, USAID's programs save countless lives and promote global stability. While concerns about excessive government spending and aligning foreign aid with national interests are valid, completely dismantling USAID would be counterproductive. Not only would it undermine the United States' humanitarian leadership and soft power on the global stage, but it could also exacerbate crises that ultimately pose threats to American security and economic interests. Rather than abolishing USAID, a more prudent approach would be to review and streamline its operations, ensuring that funding is allocated effectively and in alignment with clearly defined strategic objectives. Maintaining a robust international development agency is not only a moral imperative but also a critical investment in global stability, disease prevention, and long-term security for the United States and its allies.
