Defend American values, reject damaging Republican budget bill

To: Sen. Gillibrand, Rep. Riley, Sen. Schumer

From: A constituent in New Lebanon, NY

April 27

Democratic leaders like Sen. Booker and Rep. Jeffries are taking a principled stand against the reckless policies proposed in the Republicans' new budget bill. By staging a public sit-in protest on the Capitol steps, they are voicing their opposition to draconian cuts to vital programs like Medicaid, food assistance, and other basic needs that millions of Americans rely on. Their actions affirm that the priorities of this budget contradict fundamental American values of caring for vulnerable populations and promoting the common good. Their peaceful demonstration calls on all citizens to make their voices heard during this pivotal moment. As they rightly point out, the stakes are enormously high, with the well-being of seniors, children, and families across the nation hanging in the balance. We cannot allow misguided policies fueled by greed and benefiting only the wealthiest few to move forward unchallenged. Now is the time for civic engagement to ensure our representatives uphold the moral and ethical principles this country was founded upon. I urge those in positions of leadership to emulate the courage of Sen. Booker, Rep. Jeffries and others unwilling to remain silent in the face of such damaging legislation. Obstructing an authoritarian agenda that undermines democratic norms should take precedence over partisan politics. Extraordinary circumstances demand an extraordinary response in defense of cherished American ideals.
