Take action to hold Facebook accountable — whether through aggressive regulation, forced structural breakup, or outright shutdown. This platform has metastasized from a place to share family photos into a machine that spreads disinformation, amplifies hate speech, and destabilizes democracies. That's not an accident. It's a business model.
The evidence is damning. Facebook's own employees repeatedly warned leadership that its algorithms were amplifying misinformation, including lies about election fraud that helped fuel the January 6th insurrection. The White House identified Facebook as the number one source of COVID vaccine misinformation. And Zuckerberg's response? Stay the course. Politicians could run ads with outright lies, unchecked. Private groups became walled gardens where QAnon and violent organizing flourished, invisible to moderators. Facebook knew the potential for violence on January 6th was real — and did nothing.
Facebook itself has admitted it shouldn't be making these decisions alone and has called for government regulation. Take them up on it. Nearly 3 billion people worldwide are being fed a distorted reality through this platform, and democracies are paying the price. The time for half-measures is over.
