Stop CBP Construction in Big Bend National Park

To: Sen. Collins, Rep. Pingree, Sen. King

From: A verified voter in South Portland, ME

August 15

Bulldozers are tearing up the mouth of Santa Elena Canyon right now. Demand an immediate halt to all ground-disturbing activity in Big Bend National Park. CBP denied the construction was happening, then called it road regrading, then "survey work" — the agency has lied at every turn. DHS waived dozens of environmental and cultural protection laws to rush a $1.7 billion contract through, all to address a stretch of park that sees only 100 to 125 unlawful crossings per year. Even Senator John Cornyn wrote to Homeland Security asking for a pause. If this project were defensible, CBP could explain it honestly. It can't, because it isn't.
