I am writing to express my strong opposition to H.R. 682, which seeks to amend Title 18 of the U.S. Code to prohibit abortion in cases where a fetal heartbeat is detectable. This legislation severely restricts reproductive rights, interferes with personal medical decisions, and imposes dangerous limitations on healthcare providers.
This bill effectively bans abortion as early as six weeks into pregnancy—before many individuals even realize they are pregnant. By eliminating the ability to make informed reproductive choices, H.R. 682 disproportionately harms those already facing significant barriers to healthcare, including low-income individuals and communities of color. Additionally, the bill fails to account for exceptions in cases of rape, incest, or severe fetal abnormalities, further compounding the suffering of those in crisis.
Medical decisions should remain between a patient and their healthcare provider, free from government interference. Restrictive laws such as H.R. 682 do not stop abortions; rather, they push individuals toward unsafe alternatives, endangering their health and lives.
I urge you to stand for reproductive rights and reject this harmful legislation. Please oppose H.R. 682 and support policies that protect access to safe, legal abortion care.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to your response on this critical matter.
