Vote No on Warrantless Surveillance Reauthorization

To: Sen. Gallego, Sen. Kelly, Rep. Stanton

From: A constituent in Tempe, AZ

April 23

Vote against reauthorizing this warrantless surveillance program. It has been repeatedly abused to spy on Americans without judicial oversight, violating our Fourth Amendment rights. This program was sold as a tool to monitor foreign threats, but it has become a backdoor for warrantless searches of American citizens' communications. Federal agencies have conducted millions of these searches without obtaining a single warrant. That's not a security program—that's a surveillance state. The government already has legal tools to investigate threats. They can get a warrant. The fact that agencies prefer to bypass this constitutional requirement tells you everything you need to know about whether this program respects our rights. Reauthorizing it sends the message that convenience for law enforcement matters more than the Constitution. I expect you to oppose reauthorization unless it includes mandatory warrant requirements for any search involving Americans. Anything less is a rubber stamp on unconstitutional surveillance.
