Enough—End This War and Show Real Opposition Now
To: Sen. Schumer, Rep. Jeffries, Sen. Gillibrand
From: A constituent in Brooklyn, NY
April 22
I am writing once again to demand immediate action to end U.S. involvement in the war in Iran—and to express deep frustration at Congress’s continued failure to meet the urgency of this moment. We have now fallen into an absurd and dangerous pattern. A war launched impulsively, without authorization or coherent justification, has given way to economic fallout, global instability, and a rushed, ineffective pivot to diplomacy—after immense damage has already been done. The consequences are everywhere. The situation in the Strait of Hormuz remains volatile, with competing restrictions and blockades disrupting one of the most critical global shipping corridors. These actions are not strategic—they are reactive, escalatory, and reckless. They are driving economic instability that is being felt far beyond the region, including by American households. Diplomatic efforts have so far failed to produce meaningful results. Negotiations lack credibility, coherence, and trust. There is no clear framework, no enforceable agreement, and no indication that the administration has a viable path forward. Meanwhile, the broader regional crisis continues to deepen. Israel’s ongoing military actions in Lebanon are contributing to mass displacement and civilian harm, further destabilizing the region and undermining any possibility of sustained de-escalation. The scale of suffering and displacement continues to grow, with long-term consequences that will not be easily reversed. This is not a contained conflict. It is a cascading failure. The global impacts are severe. International institutions have warned that the economic fallout from this war could push tens of millions of people into poverty, driven by energy shocks, food insecurity, and slowing growth. These effects will fall hardest on the most vulnerable populations, deepening global inequality and reversing years of progress. This is what this war represents: not strength, not security, but systemic harm—economic, humanitarian, environmental, and political. And yet, it continues. Congress has the authority to act. Congress has the responsibility to act. And so far, Congress has not done nearly enough. This is also a political moment. If the Democratic Party is to be seen as a credible alternative—an actual opposition—it must demonstrate it. Voters are not looking for cautious statements or procedural gestures. They are looking for leadership that is willing to confront reckless power, to draw clear lines, and to act with urgency. This is not the time to moderate. It is not the time to hedge. It is not the time to accommodate or normalize what is clearly dangerous and unacceptable. I urge you to take immediate, concrete action: - Publicly and forcefully oppose continued U.S. involvement in this war. - Oppose any and all funding that would sustain or escalate the conflict. - Demand immediate clarity and accountability from the administration regarding strategy, legal justification, and objectives. - Reassert Congress’s constitutional war powers and act to end unauthorized military engagement. - Push for a credible, enforceable diplomatic resolution. - Conduct aggressive oversight of decisions that have escalated this conflict and destabilized the region. - Pursue all available constitutional mechanisms to hold the President accountable, including actions that could lead to removal from office. The stakes could not be higher. We are watching the erosion of international norms, the destabilization of entire regions, and the deepening of global inequality—all driven by a war that never should have been started. The damage being done now will not be easily undone. It will be felt for years, even generations. Why are we allowing this to continue? Congress must act. And it must act now—with clarity, with courage, and with real consequences. End this war.
