The Trump administration's policies pose a grave threat to the rights and well-being of transgender and non-binary individuals. Denying recognition of their identity, blocking access to gender-affirming care, and prohibiting service in the military are discriminatory actions that undermine basic human dignity. These policies contradict the consensus of major medical organizations, which recognize gender-affirming care as vital for the health and well-being of transgender youth. Numerous studies have shown that access to such care significantly reduces risks of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation among this vulnerable population. Moreover, banning capable and qualified transgender individuals from military service weakens our national defense by excluding dedicated and skilled personnel based solely on their gender identity. This decision prioritizes prejudice over military readiness. We urge a reversal of these discriminatory policies, which inflict harm on a marginalized community and contravene fundamental American values of equality and freedom. Protecting the rights and liberties of all citizens, regardless of gender identity, should be a core priority. Transgender and non-binary people deserve the same dignity, respect, and access to opportunities as their cisgender peers.
