Oppose Efforts to Place a Living President on U.S. Currency
To: Sen. Cruz, Sen. Cornyn, Rep. Casar

I am writing to express deep concern over recent reports that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has unveiled plans to issue a commemorative coin in 2026 featuring former President Donald Trump’s profile, marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
This effort appears to exploit loopholes in an 1866 statute and the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020. While these actions may attempt to skirt legal boundaries, the spirit of the law and longstanding American tradition are clear: living presidents should not appear on U.S. currency. Our nation was founded in defiance of monarchy and concentrated power—we do not glorify leaders as if they were kings.
This move is not just a break with precedent; it signals a dangerous shift toward authoritarian symbolism. From previous displays like tanks rolling through Washington, D.C., on his birthday to talk of being added to Mount Rushmore, these are not the acts of a public servant, but of someone seeking to be idolized.
I urge you to take a clear stand against this attempt to politicize our currency and to ensure that the Treasury Department upholds both the letter and the intent of U.S. law. We must preserve the nonpartisan, democratic principles that our nation was built on.
Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
