It is concerning and downright shocking the amount of trauma and suffering this administration is causing to children.
Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are caused by multiple things. Some can be change or improved on and some cannot. According to the CDC and Cleveland Clinic these ACEs increase the likelihood of experiencing more health problems later on in life.
Cutting funding for programs such as SNAP and Medicaid directly affects those children’s access to healthcare and food. Not having access to food and healthcare are causes of ACEs. Withholding funds to States for SNAP and Medicaid is abusive and coercive measures, that in the end cause harm to children.
Children being placed in detention centers are being restricted access to both healthcare and food. They are being held in neglectful and unsafe conditions. They are being separated from family members and friends. All of these things cause ACEs.
These children do not get to choose who they are born to, where they go to school, and situation they are born into. Hurting children because they are “different” is unacceptable. Hurting children to make a point is unforgivable.
As adults, we should be actively working to protect and improve children’s lives. This can be started by:
- Increasing funding for program such as SNAP and Medicaid.
- Abolishing detention centers such as Dilley Detention Center.
