Require Job Protections in Netflix-Warner Bros. Discovery Merger

To: Pres. Trump, Sen. Schiff, Rep. Chu, Sen. Padilla

From: A constituent in Pasadena, CA

December 5

I am writing to urge you to ensure that the proposed $82.7 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery by Netflix includes binding commitments to protect and create entertainment industry jobs in Los Angeles and Hollywood. This merger represents one of the largest media consolidation deals in recent history. Netflix will acquire Warner Bros. film and television studios, HBO Max, and HBO, gaining control of major franchises including Batman, Harry Potter, and Game of Thrones. The transaction is valued at approximately $27.75 per Warner Bros. Discovery share, with Netflix assuming an additional $10 billion in debt. While this deal may benefit shareholders and corporate executives, it poses significant risks to the thousands of entertainment workers who form the backbone of our local economy. Major media consolidations historically lead to redundancies, studio closures, and production relocations that devastate communities dependent on entertainment industry employment. Los Angeles County is home to the largest concentration of entertainment workers in the nation, and this merger could eliminate jobs across production, post-production, marketing, and administrative functions. I am asking you to advocate for enforceable conditions on this merger that require Netflix to maintain current employment levels at Warner Bros. studios in Los Angeles for a minimum of five years, commit to producing a specified number of film and television projects annually in Southern California, and invest in workforce development programs for local entertainment industry workers. These protections should be legally binding requirements, not voluntary pledges. The entertainment industry is essential to our regional economy and cultural identity. Without legislative intervention, corporate consolidation will continue to erode middle-class jobs and concentrate power in ways that harm working families. I urge you to use your position to ensure this deal benefits Los Angeles workers, not just Wall Street investors.
