Oppose the “Big Beautiful Bill”—Prioritize Education Over Military Expansion

I am writing as a concerned constituent to express my strong opposition to the proposed “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.” This legislation threatens to exacerbate the financial burdens on students and families while allocating exorbitant funds to military projects. Student Loan Overhaul Concerns: The bill proposes sweeping changes to the federal student loan system, including: • Elimination of the SAVE Plan: Terminating the Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) plan would remove a critical income-driven repayment option that currently benefits millions of borrowers. • Reduction to Two Repayment Plans: Consolidating repayment options into a standard plan and a new income-based plan could increase monthly payments and extend the repayment period, making higher education less accessible. • Caps on Federal Student Loans: Imposing strict borrowing limits may force students to rely on private lenders, exposing them to higher interest rates and fewer consumer protections. • Pell Grant Restrictions: Tightening eligibility and increasing enrollment requirements for Pell Grants could disproportionately affect low-income and non-traditional students, undermining efforts to make college more affordable. These changes risk increasing student debt and limiting access to higher education, which is counterproductive to our nation’s economic growth and social mobility. Disproportionate Military Spending: Simultaneously, the bill allocates substantial funds to military initiatives, including: • $25 Billion for the “Golden Dome” Missile Defense Project: This investment in a new missile defense system raises concerns about prioritizing military expansion over domestic needs. • Overall Defense Budget Increase: The proposed budget would raise defense spending to unprecedented levels, diverting resources from critical areas like education, healthcare, and infrastructure. While national security is important, it is imperative to balance defense spending with investments in our citizens’ well-being and future. Call to Action: I urge you to oppose the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” in its current form. Instead, please advocate for legislation that: • Preserves and enhances income-driven repayment options like the SAVE plan. • Maintains reasonable federal student loan borrowing limits to prevent reliance on private lenders. • Protects and expands access to Pell Grants for all eligible students. • Ensures a balanced federal budget that prioritizes education and other essential services over excessive military expenditures. Our nation’s strength lies not only in its defense capabilities but also in the education and empowerment of its people. I hope you will consider these concerns and act in the best interest of your constituents.
