An Open Letter

To: Rep. Whitesides, Sen. Padilla, Sen. Schiff

From: A constituent in Littlerock, CA

August 6

Please oppose S-4979, the so-called PROMISE Act of 2026, which could devastate Social Security in secret I respectfully call upon you to oppose Sen. Durbin’s proposed PROMISE Act, and any equivalent that might appear in the House of Representatives. The AARP explains concisely why this bill should be opposed: We strongly object to fast-tracking Social Security changes through Congress, as [the PROMISE Act] would do. Strengthening Social Security should happen through regular order, in full public view, with openness and transparency—rather than through a process that limits the type of amendments and sets arbitrary procedural deadlines to short-circuit the debate. If regular order is the gold standard for routine legislative matters, it certainly should be the standard for something as important as Social Security. The American people, and especially retirees are struggling more than enough now. We need to strengthen Social Security not - yet again - allow attempts to weaken it or to raid the program at the behest of financial special interests and the wealthy.
