Work with Democrats to fund our healthcare and re-open the government!

To: Sen. Schmitt, Rep. Burlison, Sen. Hawley

From: A constituent in Kirbyville, MO

October 23, 2025

I am writing as a deeply concerned constituent to express my extreme disappointment and frustration regarding the government shutdown and the failure of Congress to secure necessary funding, particularly for healthcare initiatives that benefit American citizens. The current political stalemate is causing real harm to our nation, delaying essential services, and creating severe economic uncertainty for federal workers and the public. As your constituent, I demand that you and your colleagues immediately prioritize working across the aisle with Democrats to pass a comprehensive funding bill and reopen the government without further delay. Governing requires compromise, and the current refusal to negotiate until one side capitulates is a dereliction of duty. Furthermore, I am profoundly disturbed by the actions of Republican officials, including Vice President JD Vance, and others in your party who have chosen to spread demonstrably false information during this crucial period. Specifically, the narrative that the shutdown is caused by Democrats demanding funding for "free healthcare for illegal aliens" is misleading and unhelpful to the governing process. Fact-checks clearly indicate that the Democratic position centers on extending existing Affordable Care Act subsidies for legally present Americans and rolling back cuts to Medicaid programs, which overwhelmingly serve U.S. citizens. The decision to disseminate such inflammatory disinformation to obstruct critical negotiations, rather than focusing on the fundamental responsibility of funding the government and ensuring the stability of healthcare for citizens, is unacceptable. It distracts from the pressing needs of the American people and further erodes trust in our political institutions. My expectation is that you will immediately cease engaging in obstructionist tactics and instead focus on your job: protecting and funding services for the citizens you represent. I urge you to: 1. Work actively and publicly with your Democratic colleagues to find a bipartisan path to reopen the government immediately. 2. Ensure the permanent extension of expiring healthcare subsidies to prevent massive premium hikes for millions of Americans. 3. Reject the spread of misleading information and hold fellow party members accountable for introducing disinformation into critical legislative debates. The American people deserve leaders who are willing to compromise and act in the nation’s best interest. I expect a prompt response detailing the specific steps you are taking to resolve this crisis.
