Digital Equality Act Importance

To: Sen. Merkley, Sen. Wyden, Rep. Bonamici

From: A constituent in Hillsboro, OR

May 10

I am writing as a concerned constituent to express my strong opposition to the proposed cancellation of internet infrastructure upgrades funded by the Digital Equity Act. This decision threatens to widen the digital divide and disproportionately affect communities that have historically faced barriers to digital access. Recent statements labeling the Digital Equity Act as a "racist and illegal $2.5 billion giveaway" and efforts to defund it are deeply troubling. Such characterizations not only misrepresent the intent of the Act but also risk undermining essential programs aimed at promoting digital inclusion. Access to high-speed, reliable internet is no longer a luxury—it is a necessity for education, employment, healthcare, and civic participation. Eliminating funding for digital equity programs would exacerbate existing disparities and hinder efforts to build a more inclusive and equitable society. I urge you to oppose any actions that would rescind or defund the Digital Equity Act. Please stand up for equitable internet access and ensure that all communities have the resources they need to thrive in the digital age. Thank you for your attention to this critical matter.
