I’m writing to express concern about the recent media coverage surrounding Donald Trump’s floated proposal to “raise taxes on the rich.” While headlines suggest a significant shift in Republican tax policy, the actual proposal is minimal—essentially a partial rollback of Trump’s own 2017 tax cuts, and far less progressive than simply letting those cuts expire as scheduled.
The media’s framing lends outsized legitimacy to a superficial policy gesture. Despite its negligible impact—raising just $300 billion over 10 years, compared to the $5 trillion in tax cuts Republicans are pushing alongside it—it is being portrayed as a bold economic stance. This is misleading to voters and contributes to a cycle of disinformation. We’ve seen this tactic before: floating proposals with no realistic path to enactment (such as “free IVF”) that grab headlines, misinform the public, and shape political impressions without delivering real policy change. It’s a PR strategy targeting low-information voters—not a genuine attempt to govern equitably.
I urge you to focus on tax policies that meaningfully increase revenue from ultra-wealthy individuals and corporations, rather than allow press-driven narratives to define our economic discourse. Please continue to demand honesty and substance in policy proposals, and support legislation that delivers real, measurable benefits to the American people.
