I absolutely oppose the moves the administration has made to quell dissent by specifically targeting immigrant activists and journalists. Repeating the lie often enough does not make it true, and the White House can’t turn law-abiding students and workers into “criminals” and “gang members” just by saying they are, nor ignore how convenient it is that those people happen to advocate for causes or represent cultures it doesn’t like. When Hong Kong’s freedoms and rights were destroyed by Beijing, the first step was to prosecute peaceful protesters and make it dangerous to support democratic causes. I condemn the administration for sullying America’s institutions with authoritarian oppression, and I call on my representatives in Congress to fulfill their constitutional duty to restrain the power of the Executive and restore the rights and freedoms of legal immigrants with codified legislation. Or do the lives destroyed need to be those of citizens before they matter?
